FAQs

1. What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. It is most commonly used to treat pain, though it is also used for a wide range of other health issues. According to Chinese medicine, acupuncture balances the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, your energy flow will re-balance.

2. Is acupuncture safe and are there any side effects?

Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a certified practitioner using sterile needles. Occasionally, people may experience mild side effects such as bruising, bleeding at the puncture sites, or mild soreness. Serious side effects are very rare. It's important to discuss your health history with the practitioner before undergoing treatment to minimize risks.

3. What conditions can be treated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture is used to treat various conditions including, but not limited to, chronic pain (such as headaches, back pain, and arthritis), stress management, anxiety, depression, insomnia, migraines, nausea, sciatica, sinus congestion, and digestive problems. The approach is holistic, so treatment is tailored to each individual’s symptoms and conditions.

4. What can I expect during my first acupuncture session?

During your first visit, the acupuncturist will ask about your health history, perform a physical exam, and provide an explanation of how acupuncture might help you. The session itself usually lasts between 45 to 60 minutes. Most patients find the experience extremely relaxing and may even fall asleep during treatment.

5. How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the individual and their specific health needs. Some people experience immediate relief; others may take several sessions to feel significant effects. Typically, a series of five to ten sessions is standard. Chronic conditions might require more long-term treatment plans.

6. DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

Most patients feel minimal pain as the needles are inserted. Some people feel a slight pinch, and others may not feel much at all. Once the needles are in place, there should be no significant discomfort.

7. How should I prepare for an acupuncture session?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and make sure you've eaten a light meal before your session to prevent dizziness. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, or any heavy meals beforehand. Additionally, be ready to discuss any changes in your health and well-being since your last session if it’s your follow up visit.

8. WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER AN ACUPUNCTURE SESSION?

After an acupuncture session, it's important to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity for at least a few hours to allow your body to adjust to the changes facilitated by the treatment. Some people may feel very relaxed or even slightly drowsy, so it's advisable not to drive if you feel overly tired. Listening to your body and taking it easy for the rest of the day is recommended to maximize the treatment benefits.
